What is Tequila?

Most adults have at one point in their life come across tequila in some shape or form, usually a shot with a line of salt and a lime, or a margarita, but what exactly is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The process of making tequila involves harvesting the heart of the agave plant, known as the "piña," which is roasted, crushed, and fermented to extract its sugars. These sugars are then distilled to create tequila.

Tequila also has something called an ‘appellation of origin’, meaning that it is a product designated to a region. Much like Champagne is only made in Champagne France, an agave spirit can only be considered Tequila if it made from the Blue Weber Agave grown in the Tequila Region of Mexico.

Now there are some differences when it comes to production and agave content of tequila, you may hear things like ‘%100 Percent Agave’ and ‘Mixto’ and we will get into these in later posts, so follow along and learn about what makes this spirit great, and how to avoid the products that come up short.
