Tequila Añejo

Añejo tequila is a small batch made spirit that has been aged for at least one year but less than three years in small oak barrels, typically not exceeding 600 liters. The extended aging process allows it to develop rich, complex flavors and a smoother, more refined character compared to younger tequilas like blanco and reposado.

Key characteristics of añejo tequila:

  • Color: Dark amber or golden, resulting from the longer interaction with oak barrels.

  • Flavor: Deep, rich flavors with notes of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, dried fruit, and spices. The aging process mellows the agave flavor, while enhancing smoothness and complexity, often giving it characteristics similar to aged whiskey or cognac.

  • Aging: Aged for one to three years in oak barrels, which can vary in type (often American or French oak), previously used for bourbon or other spirits, further influencing the flavor.

Añejo tequila is typically enjoyed neat or on the rocks, as its intricate flavors are best appreciated when sipped slowly. It can also be used in cocktails but is more commonly consumed like a fine aged spirit, often paired with food or enjoyed as a digestif.

Once a tequila enthusiast has developed their palate for tequila is when it’s time to start spending the resources on a well-made Añejo, just make sure to share with friends!
